Classics Challenge Book #1

His Family by Ernest Poole - Pulitzer Prize winner 1918

The reason I chose His Family out of the whole list of Pulitzer Prize winners and runners-up is because it was the first to win! What a high bar to set!

The book started off a little slow and I began to think I was in for a boring read. Within a few chapters, I had changed my mind. The book follows Roger Gale a widower in 1910's New York and his three daughters Edith, Deborah and Laura. Each of the girls has a family, career, or life they are living as grown adults. We follow Roger's thoughts and worries about all of his daughters decisions, about how alike they are to his late wife but how different they are to each other. Poole creates both very like-able characters and ones you might want to strangle.

I won't ruin the read for any of you but it turned out to be a wonderful book about family, challenges, love, women's suffrage( a bit), survival and death.

I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars!
